Leah Van Belle, Ph. D.

Leah van Belle is a Detroiter who believes in the brilliance of our children and youth and is committed to serving urban students, teachers, schools, and communities. A first-generation high school and college graduate, Leah holds a Ph.D. in Educational Studies from the University of Michigan, with an emphasis on the intersect of language, culture, and literacy equity. A former classroom teacher and assistant professor of teacher education, she works for the Michigan Department of Education, where she supports universities in developing rigorous, innovative teacher preparation programs and works on projects related to diversifying the teaching workforce to support education equity. She is the proud mother of a son who attends kindergarten in Detroit. She serves on the boards of the Black Male Educators Alliance of Michigan and the Campaign for Black Male Achievement. She is a member of the Detroit Parent Network, the Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren, and the coordinating council of 313Reads.
